GDM completely broken

Since the update to GNOME 2.20, I was getting the gdm.pid error discussed here...

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38575
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38618

That was annoying but harmless. But now, since a full system upgrade, I am completely unable to start GDM. I am getting a "GDM user 'gdm' not found" error. I tried "gpasswd -a tony gdm" to add myself to the gdm group but it did not help. Is anyone else having these problems? I am on arch64...

Re: GDM completely broken

Yeah, I discovered the exact problem this morning when i turned on my computer.
I had to roll back to the gdm 2.20.0 pkg.
I also am on arch64.

hmm..this seems like a serious problem. how can I roll back to the gdm 2.20.0 package? can I do that with pacman?

Re: GDM completely broken

Sure!
First:

pacman -Rd gdm

followed by

 pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gdm-2.20.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

Re: GDM completely broken

I am not currently on my arch system. but I am wondering...I had just reformatted so I think I only have the newest GDM; the old GDM won't be in my cache. Is there a way to get the old GDM from the arch repos??

Alright, I tossed a temporary copy onto rapidshare.
Just click "free" when it asks.

Re: GDM completely broken

Thanks again for the quick solution guys.  I found the same thing when I just turned my computer on now.  Should a bug be filed for this??  It can be an unsettling problem when you get a blue screen on linux telling you gdm doesn't work.

Re: GDM completely broken

I've hosted the package on my server for the time when paul2lv's URL expires. This should work to fix the problem...

pacman -Rd gdm
pacman -U http://wikicode.frihost.net/gdm-2.20.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

Re: GDM completely broken

Hmm, seems the new defaults.conf is not copied over the default config shipped by gdm. A 2.20.1-2 package with this fix is on its way now.
