KDE4 login manager is disabled [SOLVED]

I've updated two of my systems to KDE4.1 and both have the same problem: Login Manager is disabled (grayed out)
With that I cannot change any settings. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Just run this for now:

kdesu systemsettings

Hopefully, a friendlier, KDE3-style way to obtain administrator privileges in System Settings is implemented soon.

EDIT: Looks like it's on the to-do list for 4.2:

kdesu does not respond at all

edit: Even worst! root log in is not allowed in the KDM log in.

It's possible to login as root, but it's disabled by default. You have to edit kdmrc to allow root login.

Try kdesu again. It didn't work for me the first time, either. Or, you could just use sudo for this.

OK. That last path to the executable did work after I exported the screen (xhost + localhost 0.0) but ... it just allowed me to see the second last tab but I yet cannot change anything on it.

This is most frustrating since not being able to change the background makes conky look horrible. Aside from that I found a number of very annoying things; like not being able to switch to more than 4 desktops (I usually have 6) with the short-cut keys, the last two have to be done with the mouse.

In all honesty the developer that decided to put this software as "production" quality either does not use KDE or never tested it; the quality of KDE 4.1 is at best beta 2.

It saddens me to see this type of thing going on in my favourite distro with my favourite DM

OK. That did the trick!!
I enabled root log in and then I was able to customize the theme and get a whole lot of the other settings working.
Thank you!!

There are yet a number of other things that do not work but ... I got KDE to at least not look ugly.
Quanta, which I use on a daily basis does not work by default but one of the devs was nice enough to put a package build up, so that's fixed ... (sort of, when Quanta starts it complains that a bunch of plug-ins are missing... but the "key" components are running )

You could just use normal 'su' to switch to root and run systemsettings from it.

kdesu worked for me too, Thx. Btw i'm running kdemod 4.2.
