Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

The networkmanager icon has disappeared from right top notification area after routine upgrade. I tried to run "nm-applet" in terminal ,then I got warnings as below:~

** (nm-applet:3063): WARNING **: <WARN>  request_name(): Could not acquire the session service as it is already taken.  Return: 3

** (nm-applet:3063): WARNING **: <WARN>  constructor(): Couldn't initialize the D-Bus manager.

Could anyone help?

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

Is your network connection, in general, working? What desktop environment/window manager are you using?

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

Do you check your .xsession-error in your $HOME? Do you upgrade the package?

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

I have the same problem with my laptop. Nm-applet is running but the tray icon does show up. After killing applet and launching it again I receive the following:

$ nm-applet

** (nm-applet:3627): WARNING **: get_all_cb: couldn't retrieve system settings properties: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSystemSettings was not provided by any .service files.

** (nm-applet:3627): WARNING **: fetch_connections_done: error fetching system connections: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSystemSettings was not provided by any .service files.

I still can connect to network. Desktop environment is Gnome with Metacity.

Are you running another instance of nm-applet elsewhere? For instance, if you're using two X servers to run two environments simultaneously, nm-applet will only want to appear in one at a time. Thus, close the nm-applet open in the other env., open it in the env you want, and everything should be great and fine.

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

i think that he's using startx to login and is not using ck-launch-session. e.g.

.xinitrc

exec ck-launch-session whatever

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

it also might be that you just need to log out/restart. it looks like the old networkmanager trying to connect to the old daemon, which is gone.. or something

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

Nope, i have restarted the laptop many times and the problem is still there. I receive the same error message as Edward.H received after boot. I checked .xsession-error and it stated the following:

** (nm-applet:3326): WARNING **: get_all_cb: couldn't retrieve system settings properties: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSystemSettings was not provided by any .service files.

** (nm-applet:3326): WARNING **: fetch_connections_done: error fetching system connections: (2) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSystemSettings was not provided by any .service files.

So that's the real problem. It's the same error message you receive after relaunchin nm-applet. Can Edward.H confirm it too?

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

Nope, no influence with .xinitrc tweak.

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
#exec xterm

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

I had the same problem. When I uncommented the networkmanager-applet line from the autostart.sh the message was gone and I still get the applet to show up in my tray.

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

Where is the autostart.sh located in Gnome? At least my ~/.config/autostart/ is empty.

The autostart.sh file is create when you install awesome wm. I don't think it helps you.

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

I had this problem after upgrading to 0.8.1, and solved it by restarting /etc/rc.d/networkmanager. Hope this helps the rest of you

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

@PirateJonno

It actually helped. There's still problems with it. I have to restart it with every boot. That's not a big problem but it would be nice to get it there automatically.

$ sudo /etc/rc.d/networkmanager restart
:: Stopping NetworkManager                                               [FAIL]
:: Starting NetworkManage

There's another problem also. Now it seems to disconnect very often. About two times per minute. That did not happen when to icon was not showing. I think that the computer used netcfg while the networkmanager wasn't working.

that sounds like a driver problem to me, but could be caused by NM too. why don't you just downgrade?

P.S. I think my issue wasn't due to the upgrade but because I was messing around with D-Bus, but glad to hear it actually did something

Re: Networkmanager icon gone after upgrade

I found the solution. My daemons loaded in wrong order. I had networkmanager listed before hal in my rc.conf. I changed the order and now it is working again. Thanks for help!
