[SOLVED] X crashes when no usb mouse is connected

When I have a usb mouse connected to my laptop, everything works fine, including the touchpad. When my usb mouse is not connected, X will crash. It seems the crash is caused by using the touchpad, but I'm not really sure of that.

What's worse, it's not only X that crashes, it takes the whole OS with it, and it's not so friendly to crash in a way in which I can see some text error messages flash by or something. It just freezes, and the only way to thaw it is to switch off the laptop and switch it on again.

Here's my (very normal I would think) xorg.conf, with all the comment junk removed:

That's right, I'm not even using the synaptics module! What could be so fatally wrong with this simple configuration? And why does it only happen when the external mouse is not connected?

Note this problem exists for quite a while already, I was hoping it would go away with the next update, didn't have time to update for a few weeks, and now I updated today (both X server and kernel got updated) it's not gone sad .

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes when no usb mouse is connected

What should I look at apart from the X configuration to debug mouse issues?

Is it possible to switch off the touchpad completely so I will know if that thing is the problem?

According to gnome device manager, my external mouse is /dev/input/event8 . But setting that as mouse device in the X configuration doesn't work.

I seem to have four mice: /dev/input/mouse{0-3} . None of them disappears when I unplug the external mouse (of course I shut down X before trying that), so how do I figure out which one is the external usb mouse, which is the touchpad (and what the heck are the other two mice?).

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes when no usb mouse is connected

Hello, as far as I remember, when you've got an USB mouse (and you plug it in and out constantly), you should change

    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"

to

 InputDevice "Mouse1" "SendCoreEvents"

None of them disappears when I unplug the external mouse (of course I shut down X before trying that), so how do I figure out which one is the external usb mouse, which is the touchpad (and what the heck are the other two mice?).

Open console and do:

cat /dev/input/mouseX

Replace X with a number and move your mouse/touchpad. The output on console will appear when you'll use the device connected to a proper event.

Thanks for the reply!

Now, with the usb mouse plugged in, every click is considered a double click, and without the mouse, X still crashes. So that wasn't the solution smile .

I will now figure out which "mouse" is the external one, and set that as mouse device in the X configuration. Hopefully then forgetting to take my external mouse with me will just mean no mouse, and not a crash.

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes when no usb mouse is connected

Okay, so mouse1 is my touchpad and mouse2 is my usb mouse. This does seem to stay the same after reboots. Setting /dev/input/mouse2 as input device does disable the touchpad (of course!).

Without the usb mouse plugged in the crashes are still the same: X works for a few seconds (I can type), then the cpu goes to 100% (I can tell by the fan spinning) and the system freezes.

So I guess the touchpad is not to blame, but the presence of the usb mouse somehow prevents a crash. Either that or the problem is not in X but in the kernel. Any ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes when no usb mouse is connected

Could you please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log after the freeze? Maybe there are some answers. (if your Xorg.0.log is replaced after the next reboot, you can try the Xorg.0.log.old)
