esd to be replaced by esound: gnome is being pushed in

hello everyone,
i'm running XFCE on my old trusty AMD 750. Sound is provided by ESD, as advised in the wiki.

today i'm offered to replace esd by esound (which i believe is basically the same). if i choose to do so, gnome is being pushed in as dependency. But i don't want/need gnome. is this dependency really mandatory??

can i safely install esound without gnome?

thx

esound doesn't need gnome. (I just -Syu'd and got the question and no gnome packages).

I wasn't forced to take on any gnome packages during my xfce4 update, either.

I'm wondering too, I use KDE4 and it also asked me wether esd should be replaced by esound and also wether synaptics should be replaced by xf86-input-synaptics. What's going on there, I don't quite understand why these come up, is it because of the xorg-Updatein extra?

my mistake, gnome is not required by esound...
still, how can i figure out which update package needs to have gnome installed?

ok, i found out that xfce4-xfapplet-plugin from xfce4-goodies is the culprit. So gnome has already been installed for a while without me knowing it...

Do you mean libgnome? If so, it's a very small piece of Gnome. qalculate-gtk pulled it in on my system.

Re: esd to be replaced by esound: gnome is being pushed in

nope, i mean gnome-desktop being required by gnome-panel being required by xfce4-xfapplet-plugin from xfce4-goodies.

i did

# pacman -Rd xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
# pacman -Qdt
gnome-panel 2.24.2-1
# pacman -Rsn $(pacman -Qdtq)

to remove this useless gnome stuff.

but i suspect it will be pushed in again on the next xfce4-goodies update... no?

Probably. You may be able to compile the unused stuff out. Of course that means that you'll have to maintain that package yourself from then on.

Re: esd to be replaced by esound: gnome is being pushed in

what if i remove xfce4-goodies group, but choose to keep only some components when pacman asks confirmation for their removal (it explicity asks for every component)? only components should be updated, right?

Only the components you have installed get updated.  Groups are not looked at when pacman updates so you will not get that package pulled in again.

Re: esd to be replaced by esound: gnome is being pushed in

Xfce's ability to run gnome menu applets heavily depends on gnome stuff. So you might want to watch out with that smile. Personally, I think XFCE defeats its own purpose with the gnome menu applet support. Pulling in gnome deps to run something isn't what I'd call 'lightweight'.

For the record:  Changing this behavior is actually a hot topic in the pacman-dev scene.  See http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8242
