[Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

This story start here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=76184

And continue here:

Yesterday I bought a usb Linksys wusb54gc.

When I plug in a usb and charge the driver (rt73usb) the system work ok about 2 (or less) minutes with internet (static ip or dhcp and wpa2 personal, with netcfg work out of the box) and the system freezes completely, cause I need to do a hard reboot.

And here is where my system crash.

It a ironic situation, because 1 month ago, I bought a Lenovo thinkpad t500 with a realtek 7182 (in windows realtek 8192se) wireless chipset, without GNU/Linux support, for that reason, yesterday bought the usb dongle.
And again I run out of support.

sorry my horrible english and please help me

EDIT:
The cable extender was the problem

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

I had a similar, if not the same issue as this. Turns out i had to blacklist some modules and it worked fine after that. Here are my modules in my rc.conf:

MODULES=(rt73usb !rt2570 !rt2x00lib !rt2500usb !snd_pcsp !pcspkr)

I'm using an edimax dongle and it works perfectly with that configuration.

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

@takedown,

I have several Edimax USB dongles too which work great with recent kernels and updates. Now I have no wifi modules mentioned at all in my MODULES array. But a while ago I had to use the right rt73 legacy driver and blacklist other modules or else my systems would totally hang. These old threads mention these problems:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=66717 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=376070

But now, everything works straight off with no tinkering whatsoever. (By the way, I'm using WiCD as my network manager.)

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

I really don't know what is the problem with my Linksys wusb54g and the driver rt73usb.
In windows xp work ok, but in linux freeze my laptop thinkpad t500.

The config of my router (Linksys wrt54g2) is:
mac filter + WPA2 Personal TKIP/AES + channel 11

I try without any security restriction (wep/wpa) and the same issue.

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

I'm using the wusb54gc (same lsusb as yours) dongle right now, and it works great. I installed the rt2x00-rt71w-fw package, and I have nothing related to wireless in my rc.conf - modules.  I use netcfg profiles to connect - unencrypted and wpa2 both work fine.

The only time I ever get a freeze is if I don't pull it out before I suspend to ram. Then it will lockup when I try to resume. I've got this same dongle working on two different Arch machines - my x86_64 laptop (hp dv6000) and older gateway desktop (x86).

Is your internal wireless card disabled or broken? Make sure no other wireless drivers are loaded. Also, try taking out the PRE_UP line in your profile. Mine loads the drivers as soon as the dongle is plugged in, without the PRE_UP clause.

Good luck!
Scott

Works with my router set to wpa2/AES or wpa/TKIP, doesn't matter. Also, try a different router just to rule out any configuration problems with the router (I know you said it works on Windows, but humor me smile ). I actually had to add the opendns nameservers when I switched routers, whereas with my old router, using the router IP address as nameserver worked fine. Try putting the opendns routers first. Also, turn off MAC filtering for now,just to rule that out as well.

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

thanks for your valuable time big_smile

I think the probles isn't the driver, because this issue appear with: rt73 (legacy) and rt73usb.

phy0 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x3090 with error -71.
... (a lot of them) ...
phy0 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x3090 with error -71.
phy0 -> rt2x00usb_regbusy_read: Error - Indirect register access failed: offset=0x00003090, value=0xffff8800

now, the error is:

phy0 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x0a failed for offset 0x0000 with error -19.
phy0 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x0a failed for offset 0x0000 with error -19.
phy0 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x0a failed for offset 0x0000 with error -19.

Somewhere (can not remember) I read that maybe the problem is that the usb driver will very quickly send small packages, and this is the problem, but i really don't know.

The network work ok, I put it up, and ping google and work ok, but if i open a browser and request some urls, via dmesg i start read this errors (phy0 -> blha blha blha) and the system crash.

please do not leave me alone.
I have two network cards does not work, and I can't buy third.

PD:// I forgot, sorry for my bad English

1. Is your internal wireless card disabled or broken? Make sure no other wireless drivers are loaded.
2. Try taking out the PRE_UP line in your profile. Mine loads the drivers as soon as the dongle is plugged in, without the PRE_UP clause.
3. Try a different router just to rule out any configuration problems with the router. I actually had to add the opendns nameservers when I switched routers, whereas with my old router, using the router IP address as nameserver worked fine.
4.Try putting the opendns routers first.
5. Turn off MAC filtering for now,just to rule that out as well.

Have you tried these things yet?

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

yes :s , I will try answer in MY english tongue

1) My internal wireless card is a realtek 8172 (lspci -vv) or realtek 8192se (under windows vista).
For this moment this card haven't drivers yet, ndiswrapper work ok but under 32 bit, and my system is 64 bits :s
In win vista work very well.
Resume: linux don't load any driver tongue

2) No more PRE_UP

3 and 4) The network card appear work ok about 2 or 3 request and then my system crash. Under windows the USB dongel work very well. No router problem.
In the router I use opendns, in the laptop too via /etc/resolv.conf and my profile (I update it).

5) I try it, but the same issue.

I would like to plug this dongle to the 220v home electric system tongue

my update conf:
profile:

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="Home wireless net"

INTERFACE="wlan0"

IP="static"
IFOPTS="192.168.1.199 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
GATEWAY="192.168.1.1"
DNS1="208.67.222.222"
DNS2="208.67.220.220"
DNS3="192.168.1.1"

ESSID="tkd-lan"
SECURITY="wpa"
KEY="MyVerySecretPass"

SCAN="YES"
TIMEOUT=15

IWCONFIG="rate 54M mode managed"

without wpa_supplicant

simply start my system with the dongle plugged, dmesg say:

cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain

usbcore: registered new interface driver rt73usb

after: netcfg tkd-wireless

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

Since you've done so much work to try to get your wireless working, you may have changed some settings somewhere or installed something which is causing the problem.

Maybe you should reinstall Arch and try again with a fresh install.

This is not a very "professional" suggestion. Most likely, this isn't going to help. But it might be worth a try.

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

ok ok ok ok... my dongle start working very well smile

Tonight I install networkmanager, and fail and i need to restart my system, but when restart the system i change something:
I will try to explain me:
The adapter was connected to the computer via a cable extender that was in the box.

In the latest attempt of the night connect it directly to the PC and operates with no further errors.

I assume that was the mistake, but I will try to find the error again to stay safe, and then the item will mark as solved .

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

ok... I don't test with netcfg but i try again with the original cable extender and my system crash again.
Then I test with other cable extender (very old) more short and work very well again.

I think this confirm the cable issue

Re: [Solved] driver rt73usb freezes my system

I just had this exact same issue! I am getting "[38507.787716] ieee80211 phy5: rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x1314 with error -110" and then a bunch of Call Traces and most processes are hung. When I unplug the USB thingie, everything begins to work. And yes, there's an extender cable. Why does it hang the whole system? Should I file a bug report somewhere?
