That's what I was saying
It was not causing any troubles... at least so far. The problems seem to have resided somewhere else in .config folder. I wonder when I'll break the shell again though... not that I'm too curious
Yes, I guess the problem resides in .config/gnome-session.
]]>I've deleted LOTS of old trash dirs from my home dir (who says this is all bad, just doesn't recognize the sense behind cleaning up ) and worked on the folders waynej4 was mentioning. After renaming it twice (because the problem reoccured), I found out that the .config folder seems to be the root of all evil (at least for me).
Right now the gnome-shell is running smooth. Haven't tried customizing it too much again though. Might crash again after that. Will investigate further.
I can confirm this issue. The same thing happened to me yesterday (either gnome-shell or gnome-fallback doesn't work properly, empty GNOME 3 screen with a gnome-terminal window only).
I was investigating it and I realized that it happens when there is a tick in `gnome-session-properties` in second tab (screenshot below) and when you try to re-login.
I don't know exactly where this setting is stored but I guess it is indeed in one of following dirs:
$HOME/.gconf/
$HOME/.gconfd/
$HOME/.config/
Just get rid of that setting and hopefully it will be fine.
I hope it will help you.

Wojo

Compiz is gone already. What could be causing this issue?
]]>Good luck on the reconfigure stuff.
]]>Thanks for a quick reply. I've managed to sort it out by renaming the following folders in my home directory to .old_xxxxx:
.config
.gnome2
.gnome2_private
.dbus
.gconf
.gconfd
I logged out and then logged back in and all seemed fine. Not sure which of the above was the cause of the problem and, of course, I have to reconfigure my settings now. But at least it works, and I can copy files back slowly and try work out which are causing the issue.
Thanks for such a quick response.

Wayne.
