You've stated you'ed installed lxde, but not that you've enabled it through your personal .xinitrc?
If X dosen't work flat out, I cannot help, sorry...
Edit: Im very sorry - I reread your posts and see that X works and that you had used a personal .xinitrc... Sorry again - I shouldn't have replied as I don't know the answer...
]]>For one, after I do startx and can only see the mouse cursor, twm and xterm are starting successfully and running. If I move the mouse towards the top left corner, and press CTRL+D, it closes the xterm and ends the X session. So xterm is there but I just cant see them for some reason.
I tried reinstalling the xf86-video-intel drivers. It pulls in intel-dri which is the Mesa drivers for Intel. But as gun26 pointed out, there is also a i810-dri package which is "Mesa drivers for Intel i810". I've tried installing it but I dont know if X is actually using this or just using intel-dri. Is there a way I can force it to use i810-dri?
I also tried switching between "uxa" and "sna", but no difference there.
]]>Thinkwiki's page on the R31 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R31 says that it has Intel i810 video. I see there's a xf86-video-intel package in extra and an i810-dri package in community for the i810. Have you tried installing those? The i810 in the R31 may be too old to do vesa video.
I initially installed the xf86-video-intel package. I just tried i810-dri with no luck.
]]>Oops sorry, I missed that. The problem appears to be not in your Xorg. So you need to tell us more about your system. IIn particular, do you use KMS with intel (as it follows from Xorg.0.log) and what daemons you have running (dbus is of most interest).
I'm loading the bare minimum daemons. So dbus is not running. But after manually starting it I still get the same problem.
As far as I know, KMS is enabled by default, no? How can I check that?
EDIT: sorry I meant to include the daemons that are running which are syslog and crond. But I've started dbus manually and no success.
]]>Those should both be fine. I'm not familiar with all those "initializing built-in extension" lines you get from starting X. It could well be my ignorance of something basic that I have just not had the occasion to see before, but as it is different, it piques my curiosity as to whether those initializations could be relevant to the problem.
Well, those are bult-in extensions which X server loads. Some extensions are implemented via moduls, some are included in core functionality. Check your Xorg.log -- you have them too.

I do indeed.

I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
]]>Regarding the errors... They are harmless and do not need fixing. If you have a proper graphics driver (intel, radeon, etc) you don't need vesa/fbdev/modesetting. Also FWIW complaint about modesetting is a new thing since Xorg 1.13.

[ 4955.493] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
These are the ones that make your X server fail.
A quick search with pacman -Ss or yaourt -Ss returns:
xf86-video-vesa
xf86-video-fbdev
xf86-video-modestting (this one is in AUR)
Try to install them and see how if that fixes your problem.
