EDIT: I had blacklisted radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf when trying to get the catalyst drivers to work. After removing that, I rebooted and was presented with SLiM, which I had installed earlier.
It would seem that simply installing the open source drivers fixed the problem.
Trying to start without an Xorg.conf throws errors about failing to load modules and that there are no drivers available.

nothing I've tried has made any difference in this error message..
And what have you tried? Don't keep us in the dark.
Do you have any xorg.conf files? If so, try without them. What video driver are you using?
