Ive always experienced VLC as a bit inferior on this area, if you really dont need a gui, I would recommend MPV. Sorry if this is not helpful but it is the best help I can offer on the subject.

From asking around it seems that VDPAU still needs work both on the radeon and vlc side.

Do you get anything like the things i describe above?? Video Acceleration? And is anyone with E17 as his DE having similar problems?

Apart from the message which is annoying is it normal not to have acceleration. I enabled it from the preferences. (tools>prefs>input&codecs>hardware accelerated decoding)
