[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... render ring idle
Using 3.16.4-1-ARCH kernel.

EDIT: looks like this is now queued for 3.16.4, https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … ring.patch
Good news: just upgraded to 3.16.4 via core repository, and I can once again switch on OpenGL rendering and all the silly desktop effects I want...
After 2 switch on, everything went well! seems it is been finally solved!

Thank you, awesome news! Though for the moment I guess I'll continue using -ck at least until I finish reading the LKN book

thankyou graysky
+1 Thank you!
]]>Excellent. Also read on a Greg Kroah-Hartman post on G+ that kernel 3.17 is also near final status.

thank you! i hope for the next kernel!

Why not just compile it yourself with the patch or use the packages I provide in repo-ck until upstream merges the patch?
Installed ck-core2 and the problem is still there.
Is the patch applied to ck-core2 branch as well or should I just install the ck-generic kernel?
Same here. The ck repo did not to the trick, but the download provided in #57 works like a charm.
Thanks flexo!

]]>The patch I apply to linux-ck and linux-ck-* may help with your specific problem or it may not. I can only verify that the patch fixes the 'render ring failure to init/declaring it wedged' problem I experienced on an older X4500HD system.
Thanks a lot @graysky, I have to admit I tried applying the patch to both 3.16-1 and 3.16-2 but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. That is, until I switched to your ck repos and the results were great, thank you!
On a side note, I noticed that for some reason I'm only able to change the backlight brightness at bootup. I this something to be expected due to acer's drivers, or... does anyone else have this happening? I'm on an eMachines D728, with an Intel GMA 4500M, by the way.
