Standard xorg drawing operations have no concept of syncing to the display, a compositor's job is to map these into a accelerated context using OpenGL or so and they do have that concept and can appropriately sync the changes to the display's output rate.

of course, sorry.. forgot to mention my window manager.
So I'm using xfce4 and my settings manager is the xfce4-settings-manager..
The window settings I'm talking about is under: xfwm4-tweaks-settings.
If I disable composit there I get video tearing.
Why is this expected?

After I've disabled the Composite option in the window settings,
I've got massive video tearing in my web browser (like in the good old days...).
Enabling it again and the tearing was gone.
Can someone confirm?
