Please read the forum rules and open a fresh topic for a fresh problem . Also, PPC topics go under x86_64 & other architectures.
]]>I'd like to know what's involved in hosting and maintaining a ppc repo, if anyone could post/PM me useful links/docs/etc, t'would be grand.
]]>By the way, I find that the PPC repository sites can be a little flaky. Sometimes I have to try a pacman command two or three times before it will properly connect and download a package.
I'm using packer as an AUR helper. I'd like to use an "ABS helper", but haven't really found one that I have been able to use. The biggest problem is that, after using the "abs" command, the ABS tree is full of "i686" and "x86_64" packages. Most of them compile and work just fine, but I have to add "ppc" to the "arch" like in the PKGBUILD file for every package.
]]>After a base install, I'd say about one third of the packages I installed were by using the ABS, including OpenBox. The Arch Linux PPC repositories only seem to host [core] and some of [extra]. "libpng" and "libjpg" being out of date was a little bit of a problem, but not much.
Since installing the OS, I received a few updates through pacman.
]]>I'd still like to know if there are still working ppc repositories...
]]>Did you get a working community repository? I've a similar problem, and had to use AUR / ABS / Yaourt.
As I side topic; I appreciate PPC is not maintained, but if it's a case of not having a host to serve the content then perhaps I could help? i.e. is it a case of hosting a bunch of files for people to grab... that would be a cool project, and I've always wanted to give back to the community, but how would I start?
Thanks,

Otherwise get it from subversion or ask the PPC devs to add it.
]]>My mirrorlist file reads like:
#
## $repo: Arch Linux PPC @REPO@ repository
##
#
# Europe
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinuxppc.org/$repo/os/ppc
Server = ftp://ftp2.archlinuxppc.org/$repo/os/ppc
Server = http://archlinuxppc.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/archlinuxppc/$repo/os/ppc
Server = http://mir2.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/$repo/os/ppc
now how do I add the others to my list, and how do I go about compiling my own packages from source?
]]>If so then that leads me on to my next question which is how do I use sources to build my own packages. I'm used to using 'checkinstall' to produce debs, is there some similar mechanism for Arch and pacman?
Also where would be a good place to ask about PPC specific issues?
]]>There's nothing commented out, but it does seem to do the same application 4 times.

Arch is primarily geared towards i686 and x86_64 bit architectures, although there are a few threads here on the forum that claim that it also works on i586. ArchLinuxPPC is a community project and so you may or may not find a PPC package for all the software. But you may get lucky and find that someone may have packaged it for PPC and put it in AUR. Go over to AUR and search for the package and then check out the PKGBUILD, to see if it supports the PPC architecture.
