Laptop Issues - Issues dealing with Linux on laptops.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewforum.php?f=31I am moving some of the existing laptop topics to the new forum.
Hooray, thanks man!

]]>Hello everyone, I am fairly adept with linux and know most of workings of the system. I found out about archlinux several months back. The big distro I was into was gentoo. Of coarse, as most of you may know, it takes too much time to compile everything. Now that I have researched into archlinux, I am VERY satisfied with what I see. My big question is that I am going to install archlinux on a laptop of mine, finally, that uses acpi to manage the fan/heat/power etc... The problem is that the kernel on the archlinux install cd doesn't have acpi built in nor are the acpi modules themselves on the cd. I need these modules to install archlinux without burning up my laptop. I was wondering if anybody knew where I could get the modules. I am using the 0.6 install cd. I haven't looked at the 0.7 beta install cd, yet. I would appreciate any help.
Well, if you can, get the 0.7 iso... that helps. You can install without acpi, your laptop shouldn't require acpi to run safely (unless it is a very old laptop, in which case, Arch might not be the best idea). The stock arch kernels have almost everything built, either in the kernel or as modules. Once you install the kernel, add "acpi=on apm=off" to your kernel boot line. When you boot, this will enable acpi.
You may also want to pacman acpi and acpid, and run acpid at boot time (rc.conf).
There is a laptop-mode-tools package in my repo (below) which helps save some power while running off batteries. In addition, you may want to grab the cpudyn package which allows you to use acpi throttling and disk spin-down through acpi.
]]>I still hate:
tough (tuff)
through (thr-oo)
enough (e-nuff)
bomb (b-omm) and tomb (t-oomb)... wtf?
silly mish-mash language
colour
centre
and
neighbour
right?
Yep. That's the correct spelling. Unless you're from a terribly lazy, obese couch-potato society that likes to drop letters...
Don't they worry about all those extra letters running around loose, possibly getting together and forming nasty words?
dp: how is it that every thread we hijack ends up on this topic?

]]>only if i can correct your use of "color" "center" "neighbor" do you guys have something against the french langauge or what?
people from the us of a should love the french ... only remember the Boston tea party ;-)
colour
centre
and
neighbour
right?
- glad you didn't take offense - some poeple do - feel free to correct mine too
the best teacher is experience ... and as i'm lazy learning words for foreign langues (considering this a very boring action), i really appreciate it, if my english is corrected --- offense would be being quiet and letting this crazy swiss from the other side of the globe using wrong words, eh?
]]>[American=> realise, British=> realize]
]]>well, you could try mood instead of "feeling" too - if that sort of suggestion helps :?:
thanx for english correction - always welcome
]]>yeah i agree with you, but most of my problems I have figured out myself - and i've made a few laptop packages i don't even need... the reason I requested it was so that I could help others with laptop issues.... and discuss some of mine (heat...ack!)
even if the user base isn't as large, i feel it would be nice to have a place for arch users to go....
and alot of laptop issues can be solved with "grab this package"
i'm not against your idea ... and if you see the need, feel free to ask Judd for it ... only: the forum is already pretty full
