Re-programmed power edge to win2000. Copied win98SE folder win98 to HDD #2 (Fat32)
Installed win98se from HDD#2.
Now have win2000 and win98SE on separate drives.
]]>What I was suggesting, don't know if it will work for you, is to copy the contents of the win98 disk to some server. lets call it serverX. There it sits on serverX in an ftp folder.
Now, you boot with dos on the poweredge (lets call it PE). You create two fat32 filesystems on the PE. One main of size bigASS, and a second on of size 1gig or so..(maybe smaller. don't know how big the win98 disk is).
then format them with the dos disk (might require a reboot).
ok. now you have two partitions on PE, both formatted with dos. now boot up knoppix (usb cdrom?) and mount the 1gig partition. copy the contents of serverX ftp folder to the 1 gig partition.
reboot with your dos disk again.
now go to the d: (that is likely what it is called), and just run setup from the windows directory.
failing all this, just take the hard drive out of the damned computer, put it in a computer that you know will work, install windows98, then slap it back in the PE and add the drivers you need.
barring those two options, i have no clue...this is really a linux forum anyway.
The entire win98 file was copied from USB HDD to /home/knoppix/win98.
All attempts to load the win98 file into the SR0 drive have failed, perhaps primarily because it isn't recognized as a HDD in Knoppix.
As a side note, Knoppix will not load from CD with the server CD. The CD in the server is blacklisted for linux....samsung SN124.
I utilize HDD boot to get knoppix loaded.
The present memory in the server is 512MB. This limits operating to about 350MB in the HDD boot mode. Win 98 is 170+MB.
Perhaps another way?
]]>Attempts to load File Win98 fail in knoppixLive CD due to mount required in limited /mnt file(3.9MB max). Win 98 is too big for Knoppix.
?
HDD appears as sr0 in Knoppix but cannot write to HDD.

Attempts to load File Win98 fail in knoppixLive CD due to mount required in limited /mnt file(3.9MB max). Win 98 is too big for Knoppix.
HDD appears as sr0 in Knoppix but cannot write to HDD.
Basic problem is the CDROM which won't boot nor setup with the installed adaptec hdwre.
]]>If the hardware isn't on Microsoft's approved list for windows 98, then you've got to bring it into spec. Either by replacing it or by virtualizing it.
]]>I am able to boot Knoppix via USB only. The CDrom is blacklisted for linux.
The scsi drivers are embedded and are no problem. The problem is related to the CDRom and the adaptec interface according to the Dell forums.
The drives have been formatted Fat32 but the win98 install CD fails to load following the adaptec ID info presented during install sequence at the very beginning. Thus, the adaptec interface is incorrect.
How do I now proceed, not having access except by Knoppix Live CD thru the USB interface? I am not sure it will run since I formatted.
Some reports say it can be done..................
]]>Does that server have an IDE interface at all? If so, I'd try installing a IDE drive and setting it up on that, most of the other devices shouldn't cause you too much trouble, though you may be limited to a low-res, low-color display.
If that still fails, you might try something like a real server os running VMWare or something similar to virtualize all the devices that are causing your trouble.
]]>I need positive responses to solve this problem and many people desire win 98 on their server units(most have need for applications on win98 not available on the server).
]]>The disc stops entering the setup almost immediately. Dell reports it does not validate win98 for power edge servers.
Some users report win 98 in some power edge units.
I need the info on how to do the trick...it doesn't follow conventional approach.. The adaptec interface is incorrect. CDrom is samsung SN124.
None of the power edge info details any install of win98 on the forums.
End of story.......
]]>Please advise how this can be done.
