]]>I had to disable a non-existant floppy drive in my bios and that fixed the problem. I saw others in a ubuntu forum had fixed their problem the same way.
What was reported there (disabling floppy in BIOS and adding "!floppy" to MODULES) worked for me too. Thanks for the hint! This issue has been bothering me for weeks

]]>It's not clear what happened to solve it, but it proves that it can be solved.
Also, after a bit of googling, it seems like the error we are suffering from is related to gnome-panel.
I will see what happens if I try to start my gnome-session without the gnome-panel...
