Making custom changes is recommended to be placed in xorg.conf, but nothing stops you from instead adding them to e.g. xorg.conf.d/custom.conf or whatever.

I can't find this line in the wiki page. What's the point about this?
The point is that xorg.conf.d/ gets updated by the distribution, whereas xorg.conf is fully under your personal control and will not be messed with by the distribution..

CAn monitor setups also be done in .conf files?
Then I too can remove xorg.conf
Yes, they can. Try 10-monitor.conf. I also suggest having a look at the wiki article.

Thanks for the clarification, that's good to know.
In this case I guess the simplest thing is to edit the *.conf files and then compare them to *.conf.pacnew fileas after upgrades, rather than creating a brand new xorg.conf (like I did! ).
At this point, I would like to hear the opinion of Arch devs about this.

I do it as well. But only my dual monitor setup, which I think fits better in xorg.conf rather than some 10*-xxx.conf file. Helps me remember where I have made the changes should I need to make some more.

Apparently, my approach is incorrect, as how I've learned from another thread. Those files I've edited will be overwritten upon upgrading.
*Update*: made a "custom.conf" file inside "xorg.conf.d" and migrated those lines I had in synaptics.conf to it and it works. That's it, probably, I guess the "custom.conf" won't get overwritten.
