I usually use
pacman -Syu
to upgrade my system. It usually had updates quite frequently (almost every day) in my previous Arch. Now I just installed a new Arch. This command always gave the result the system was already updated:
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
there is nothing to do
But the problem is it's been like that for more than a week. I feel something may be wrong if I don't get updates for such a long time. In my /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, everything is commented but these four:
Server = http://mirror.cs.vt.edu/pub/ArchLinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = http://mirror.umoss.org/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Can someone help me diagnose? Thanks.

Are those mirrors still up to date? For a quick check just look here: Arch Mirror-Status page.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

I guess, here is the reason: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101945

Can we make a sticky out of it? Yeah, I actually hope people read them before posting ...

Seems like this is something too important (and bound to be too prevalent in coming weeks) to be relegated to a forum post. A news item, perhaps? I know I'm asking in the wrong place, but perhaps the devs (Roman?) would be able to provide a list of mirrors adhering to the new tiered schema?

That's why I've asked for a sticky, but maybe a news item would be better.
You've got https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus I'm not sure if these are all the mirrors we have now, but using those you're save.

Right you are. Carry on.

Before this "mirror problem", I was using one that was in the List. Wasn't updated, too, so I switched it.
What I want to say:
Yes, there are much more servers (also see /etc/pacman.d/pacman.conf). But maybe, they are out of date.
And If you change the server, take a pretty acutal one. Because I think that i.e.
ftp://atviras.lt/archmirror/ Lithuania 0,9 seconds 2,85 days Mo 26 Jul 2010 04:01:12 CEST
will fall out of the list soon...

I'm not sure if the current pacman mirrorlist takes into account only the mirrors obeying the new tier setup.

MirrorStatus only show mirrors that have been synced within the last week. (other mirrors are obviously broken and not really interesting for users)
I have setup a second page which also lists problematic mirror and an error log at the bottom: https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorProblems (Yes, I should probably link this somewhere)

Will the mirrors that stopped syncing because of the tiers issue get delisted from pacmans mirrorlist (at some point) or do you need to open a bugreport?
What about the mirrors that are notoriously un-synced? It's cool to spread the burden of distributing packages but at some point (3 months?) it may hurt more than it helps.

Roman is taking cares of this. And it's not just those mirror admins weren't notified a long time ago...they simply didn't respond. Hopefully some will now notice that their sync scripts don't work anymore and contact us. Removing a mirror is only a last resort when we didn't find a way to get in contact with them. In the end we need mirrors and appreciate them sharing their resources with us.

That's why I suggested delisting after 3 months. Even though universities have summer break, the admins should be around all the time.
I know that w/o the mirrors Arch is pretty much dead and cold but if you need old packages there's always ARM ;-)
You may put the delinquents on another list, not shared with the users, hoping they will start syncing one day. If they start syncing regularly, add them back to the mirrorlist. You don't have to remove them from some rsync whitelist at all.

Thanks all. Problem solved.
