Try disabling Kernel Mode Setting (KMS), which is enabled by default.
Add this to the kernel line in the grub file (/boot/grub/menu.lst):
radeon.modeset=0

unfortunatelly it doesn't has any effect.

try
nomodeset
instead of
radeon.modeset=0

Free driver is unusable with ATI HD 5XXX Hardware
Install catalyst driver. Read wiki.

Excuse my poor English.

have you taken a look through this wiki? http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati
it offers many suggestions, especially this section which details which packages you need to run the radeon or radeonhd driver:

Have you installed the readeonhd drivers, or ati drivers?
I used to had a similar problem with HD3200 and it solved by using xf86-video-ati drivers instead of xf86-video-radeonhd.

hi,
i tried both. there is not even a logfile.

Have you tried catalyst? The free drivers lag behind catalyst in terms of new card support.

i don't want to use catalyst - i hate it. wiki says, that ati-driver and radeonhd should support my card. anyone who made it work?

I should have paid more attention the type of graphics card... doh! The initial support for the "evergreen" line of AMD chips is just filtering to the opensource driver now (20th of Aug)
see:

I don't think the new changes have filtered into the packages available from arch repos, so you will probably have to compile from source, or use catalyst for the short term

Use xf86-video-ati-git.
