No X Installed, Is it possible to split up the monitor screen?[SOLVED]

Is it possible to watch multiple programs run at once on the screen without X installed? Such as split the screen 4 ways, each 1/4 with it's own program running.

Example: my server without X, on it's own monitor, running iftop, htop, iotop, and the 4th terminal available for any new commands.

I found http://www.linux.org/lessons/beginner/l5/lesson5b.html which briefly covers virtual terminals without X, but toggling between them rather than watching them all at the same time.

An alternative to tmux is GNU screen. A lot of people prefer tmux and for good reason.

I've used screen for quite a long time now. I think it's time for a change smile

Re: No X Installed, Is it possible to split up the monitor screen?[SOLVED]

Thanks for all the input!!

After a bit of reading, I decided to go with tmux.

I started by trying it on my desktop to get a feel for it before installing on my new server. In the process, I learned what a terminal multiplexer is and how much I have to learn to use all it's functionality!

I did manage to get it to do what I wanted, and have a screen shot to show off at my blog http://www.jeffstory.org/blog/?cat=1. I must admit, I was a bit underwhelmed with what our wiki has on tmux so far. On the other hand, I was completely overwhelmed (as usual) by trying to decipher the cryptic (to me) "man tmux" pages.

I did find that http://blog.hawkhost.com/2010/06/28/tmu … ltiplexer/ was a good source of info for me.  Next, I learned that by blindly following our wiki, without knowing screen commands, and issuing the "I want it to behave like screen" command, I changed all the default key bindings!! After getting it back to default key bindings,  I followed the above guide, and was actually able to get it to do some of the things I wanted!!!

jeff, it would be great if you would consider updating the wiki with any useful information that you came across. smile

Ok,
I'd be glad to add some info to the wiki.
