I don't use a DM or any kind of login utility except the default login routine: name, password, startx.
However, as of the last major update it seems like when I enter my username I must wait about 5 seconds before I can even begin to type in my password. I have no idea what could cause this delay seeing as how it's before my username is even authenticated.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I'd look for start-up logs, what has been installed (extra) last time? More dependencies? Also, what has been added when you issue a

But...five seconds, is an eternety, as far as I can see...

The thing is, it's before I even enter my password. I am not logged in yet.
<I enter my username>
<wait 5~6 seconds>
<I enter my password>
<I enter startx>
<Everything is normal>
I don't get why it would pause after my username. Does the system begin to load dependencies and start up items before the password is entered?

5 seconds are close to eternity in this context. I have experienced some delay myself, not worse (time wise) than that the two first chars of my pass gets printed if Im in a hurry Making prompt look like this:
hostname login: username
paPassword:
However, my system's been up for 10h now and logging in on another TTY doesn't show any delay. Hmm, gonna try making the first login on another TTY right after next boot.

5 seconds is forever. I typed my entire password on more than one occasion, on accident. I had to then make sure it wasn't in any bash history etc.
I wonder what the heck is doing it, I tried a mess of things to fix it. It is the same on my new BFS patched kernel and my old standard kernel.

Try using fgetty instead:

I will give that a shot and see if it improves. It used to work good, I have no idea what caused it to change. I think fgetty sounds nice in any case, it's lighter and I like that.
