Help me secure my lamp server

I have installed a phpBB and on a lamp server, but i am not very good with security.
What should i watch out for?

How can i secure my apache and mysql?
Any hints and tips?

Yes u right. I have already done some stuff

1) Strong and different passwords for root and Mysql root
2) Created a database for the forum and a separate user for the DB with a strong password

I read something about chrooting apache, but i don't know how to do that.
Is it really necessary? If it is good practice, how can i do it?
Can it be done with mysqld too?

Also how can i protect myself against brute force attacks?
i have configured sshd successfully but i don't know what to do about
Apache and mysqld.
