Nologin or False Shell

I can't seem to find a good Google answer to find out if there is any difference in setting a users shell to 'nologin' or 'false'. I have set a generic user both and couldn't find the difference but that doesn't mean there isn't. I was wondering if anyone knows the difference or if I should use either or?
