Alright, so I tried to install Arch once before but eventually got frustrated and quit. Reason being that the instructions for X and Openbox weren't working so when I logged in and said initx or startx then tried to start openbox I'd have errors. Now I'm going to try again but from a Virtual Machine. Can someone please give me instructions on how to install Arch that I can follow? Thanks.

Well I don't know about you, but I just followed the Beginners Guide when I installed Arch the last 3 times, and it worked perfect each time. If you have a nvidia card, don't do the alternate nvidia configuration for X, because that didn't work for me. Just stick to the basic X configuration.

I don't use nividia, I did the regular beginner install and it didn't work, then I tried doing the new instructions for x and openbox b/c apparently the beginners guide wasn't updated or something (that's what the dude on the last thread said) but that didn't work either. I really want to use Arch b/c I'm all about minimalism but it didn't work last time which was very much discouraging.

What were the specific errors you got?
Also did you make a ~/.xinitrc file before running startx? If not, I would make one and just put "exec openbox-session" in it.

I'll tell you when I install Arch in my virtual machine.
(watch me end up not having problems now just b/c I mentioned it here)

That's interesting, because someone removed that part from the beginner's guide

I never needed to use .xinitrc. The newer xorg doesn't need it, according to the wiki..
Just edit /etc/inittab for your display manager.
And /etc/rc.config for your daemon/display manager..

If don't have a display manager though then obviously you would use .xinitrc.

Maybe you did not configure xorg correctly. Last I checked, the instructions for xorg in the beginners guide were old. You have to go the the xorg page in the wiki at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.

Damn, I think I just missed it . I could think that the things related to .xinit were in another place and were moved. Well thanks for telling me

Unless they fixed something from last time [about 6-8 months ago], I had a hell of a difficult time with installing Arch in a VM. It would freeze up when I would try to install the packages at the initial stages. The only way I got past it was using the core disc and that froze on me once. You can give it a shot on a VM so you're more familiar with it.
Just make sure to follow the beginners guide completely. When I first started trying to install Arch, I just kind of breezed over the steps and sure enough, my install barely worked....barely. Give it a couple of times, each time will get better and better and once you get it done correctly, you're basically set for life
