Is it dangerous to upgrade not all packages that are available...

Is it dangerous to upgrade not all the packages that are available for upgrade?
May it crash something which is not easy/possible to fix without reinstalling the whole system?

Read recent forum posts by people that update xz and not libarchive.   Their pacman got broken...

I already have, I got the same problem. What if Arch maintainers upload not everything that is necessary for upgrade to repos. Everyone who upgrades that moment will break the system?

So if I do "pacman -Syu", I can be 100% sure that pacman will download all the packages which are necessary for correct upgrade? (I broke my pacman...)

P. S. Can "pacman -Syu" be perfored with "yaourt -Syu"? Do they do the same thing with the same result?

One more thought. For example I didn't upgrade the system for a really long time (let's say 2 years) and I wanna install some app. Should I upgrade the whole system before that installation to prevent crash?

What if I haven't upgrade Arch for 2 years and after this time I upgrade only kernel. Can it cause any system damage/instability?

Sorry to sound harsh, but do you do any actual research or thinking before asking questions? You could try telling us your real intention behind all this questions, what you try to achieve. Might be more productive.

If you are asking such questions Arch is most likely not the answer. And yes, user space programs might be too old for the new kernel or pacman might just not work in the first place due to other changes on our side.

Well, I'm just curious to know how it works. Sorry if I am annoying...

Some packages are compiled towards modern kernel features. Features come and go over the versions, so packages might need to be rebuilt. You can, however, lock packages from beeing updated. Wether they work or not is either a question of knowledge or trial and error.

The key thing to keep in mind is that Arch is a rolling release: you're better off if you roll with it...
