iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

Hello,

I'm looking for a way to sync my iPod Touch 3G with Linux, preferably through Rhythmbox. When I ran Crunchbang I didn't succeed on getting Rhythmbox to see my iPod Touch, though I got GTKpod to. I know Ubuntu has auto-support and I synced music to my iPod Touch 3G successfully. Since I'm running Arch now, I want to be able to sync my iPod Touch 3G with Arch Linux, preferably through Rhythmbox. I have already followed the steps given on the Wiki page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IP … .x_and_4.x), but without success. Rhythmbox only notices my iPod for a brief period of around half a second, then it dissapears. (I was thinking that I might need nautilus, since that's the only thing I haven't got installed which Ubuntu has, but I don't really feel like using nautilus since I'm running openbox)

So can you help me to sync my iPod Touch 3G (iOs 4.2) with Arch, preferably through Rhythmbox?
If you need any more specs or info whatsoever, just let me know! Thanks in advance guys.

I heard Banshee has better support for iThings than Rhythmbox.

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

I have a 16 GB 2nd gen iPT and was pondering using VirtualBox with Windows XP. You could install a minimal LiteStep theme with an Apple wallpaper just for iTunes, because, in all honesty, you'd probably be better off with iTunes.

I tried copying files to it via USB and running iFile (only if it's jailbroken) to play music and such and I think this method really gimps its functionality.

Instead of a full blown XP you could use MicroXP, or better yet TinyXP because MicroXP tends to be a little bit too anorexic.

Choose a wallpaper from here or here (or Google), use RocketDock (or similar) for shortcuts to MyComputer, iTunes and iFunBox - because that's all you'd need from such a minimal setup. Maybe some folder and file icons. You can find a shitload on the net. You could even change the boot screen to something like this (using BootSkin).

I know it's still like putting lipstick on a pig though... But as I said, I think iTunes, love it or hate it, is a necessary evil.

PS: I also have a 100 GB ext3 media partition (formatted with 'inode 128' so Ext2fsd can open it under Windows) just for music and music videos ready to be synced (and shared) with Windows and, obviously iTunes since I dual boot with XP.

Hope some of this info helps. wink Cheers.

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

I use gtkpod to manage the music of my itouch 3g, with iOS 4.1 without problems. However, there's one thing I had to do a couple of weeks ago. I "downgraded" from the -git versions of libgpod and gtkpod to the standard versions in the repository. It seems the stable version has already reached "maturity" and the -git versions are experimenting with new features, which caused problems for me.

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

Thanks guys, I'll try Banshee first and GTKpod if that won't work. Currently I'm dualbooting between Arch and Windows (have to keep it for school and iTunes), so using Virtualbox isn't really necessary.

In the meantime, are there any other options? It has to be possible!

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

I can, again, sync successfully with GTKpod but not with Banshee. I'll try Rhythmbox again and Exaile too. Any other music players recommendations?

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

No luck with Exaile. Rhythmbox throws me this error:

Device 0 (VID=05ac and PID=1299) is UNKNOWN.
Please report this VID/PID and the device model to the libmtp development team

Any fix for this?

Re: iPod Touch 3G (running iOS 4.2)

GTKpod works, it's the other apps (Rhythmbox, Exaile, Banshee) that don't
