I know you can put "colorscheme blah" inside /etc/vimrc, with the colorscheme residing in ~/.vimrc/colors/blah
But is there a way to put the colorscheme within /etc/vimrc itself? I like to minimize and centralize config files

Yes, but it's rather messy. If you want it system wide, just trow it in /usr/share/vim/vim73/colors/

Well, have a look at the colorschemes in the folder Mr.Elendig mentioned. It's pretty much all just normal hilight commands. You'd have to put all of these into your ~/.vimrc.

I did try doing that without success, so I'm not sure if i'm meant to use a different syntax or something when putting directly into /etc/vimrc

/usr/share/vim/vimfiles/colors/ is actually a better place for your own files
