How to get a desktop environment

Hello there

I've been using linux for about 2/3 years now.

First ubuntu (hardy) then linux mint (gloria).  I've also tried several other distro's but not for any length of time.  However I know several people speak very highly of arch linux and so I would like to get round to using it.

Unfortunately I guess I'm rather used to throwing the disk in the drive and having an os that I can use and then build on.

Perhaps I'm not ready for arch linux yet, but I would like to learn.

I am a bit stuck because after installing the os on reboot all I get is

myhost login:#

to which i login with root and then my password

However I don't know how to get any further.
Can someone direct me to where I can find out how to install a destktop environment and then to get my network card working.

Thanks
