I followed the instructions on the wiki but i still can't connect with wireless, the module i load is ath5k
the network adapter: Atheros Communcations Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
i'm not sure how to do this... the archwiki page on my model of asus eee says that wireless works "out of the box"
thanks.

It works out of the box for me and it uses ath9k (not ath5k) module.
Offline
strange, i tried ath9k too but it doesnt work.

My wife's running the same netbook and wifi worked out of the box.
are you using a custom kernel?
how are you trying to connect? (networkmanager, wicd, command line, etc)
are you manually loading the atheros module through rc.conf?
Offline
the kernel is not custom.
i did modprobe ath9k then in rc.conf all i did was add wlan0 as the network device.
Offline
what does ifconfig give you?
Offline
ifconfig: wlan0 linke encap:Ethernet HWaddr blahblahblah
up broadcast multicast myu: metric:1
etc, no inet addr though.
Offline
ok, how are you trying to connect?
are you using a gui or the command line?
Offline
dhcp or static
Offline
here's what I would try (as root/sudo)
iwconfig essid wlan0 "NAME-OF-WIRELESS-NETWORK"
dhcpd wlan0
that should hopefully work but will at least give you an error if it doesn't.
iwconfig should show you connected to the ssid you defined with an assigned ip.
Offline
i get "iwconfig: unkown command wlan0
and
dhcpd command not found.
am i just being stupid?
Offline
Try
iwconfig wlan0 essid "NAME OF WIRELESS NETWORK"
iwconfig wlan0 commit
dhcpcd wlan0 (or dhcpd wlan0, I have to use dhcpcd for some reason)
99% sure you have to name the interface before the command in iwconfing.
EDIT: Repeating myself.....

okay that works but when i do iwconfig wlan0 commit, i get this:
Error for wireless request "commit changes" : Set failed on device wlan0; operation not supported.
also dhcpcd just times out
this is commandline since i can't actually get a DE or anything without internet.

Here's probably a question we should have asked you at the beginning: is it an open network or is it encrypted?
Offline
encrypted.

That changes things a bit then.
Use this to help you, it should work:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … nual_Setup
Go down to Step3 and follow whichever encryption you have.
