[solved] Ncurses acting funny in screen/tmux

Having strange random problems with ncurses applications if I run them in any terminal multiplexer. Screen, screen-git, tmux.
I've tried them in different terminal emulators also. Same results. Here's some pics:

Edit: goes away when I'm using root (with bash), so I think it's someplace in my .zshrc

edit: confirmed, i'll just have to dig through my huge .zshrc

Re: [solved] Ncurses acting funny in screen/tmux

I think I had a similar problem.  It seems using export TERM=xterm (or any of it's variants) causes tmux to interfere with ncurses applications ( I originally had it set to xterm-256color; changing it to xterm-88color or xterm didn't cause any changes in the symptoms).  This would only happen if tmux was started under these conditions; changing the TERM variable once the session started didn't correct the problem or vice versa.  Changing to export TERM=screen-256color  in my .zshrc made the problems go away.   Some other symptoms: Irssi scrolling results in third/half the page getting redrawn, ncmpcpp leaves line highlights behind in whitespace when moving through the playlist and ranger leaves highlights behind when scrolling down a list of files.
Edit: reading this first might have saved me some time lol
