[SOLVED] - cups wants /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal

I removed hal after KDE4.6, checked the udev and cups wiki pages and did the necessary (I think).

My printer is listed under lsusb but doesn't accept print jobs. CUPS says "Paused - "Backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal does not exist!"

Anybody else out there with the same experience?

Does it do its job when you put hal back? Not sure about the status of hal, but it being deprecated does not mean there isn't a single app out there that doesn't depend on it anymore.

Re: [SOLVED] - cups wants /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal

Sorry about the late reply, for some reason I didn't get a mail...

Yes, I installed hal again and its cups backend and I can print again.

However, how do other people do it? I wouldn't mind getting rid of hal and I thought a udev rule for my printer would do it. Question now is: did I botch it somehow or is there something else I am missing?

I too removed hal after upgrading to KDE 4.6. Cups is still working but my printer is connected through the network and not attached by usb.

Re: [SOLVED] - cups wants /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal

Anything new on this topic? I also had to install hal-cups-utils (and thus also hal) for my printer being recognized, any chance to get this done by udev?

Blacklisting usblp as recommended in the wiki solved the problem for me.
