Install package in different directory

Suppose I want to install octave in /opt.  I'm pretty sure that if I compile from source I can do:

$./configure --prefix=/opt

or something like that.  pacman has a --root option, but the man page seems to say it is not for doing what I want to do.  Is there a way to do this without compiling from source?
