Dual boot - kernel updating

Hi

I have dual boot with Ubuntu and Archlinux. Grub2 is installed in Ubuntu partition. So, today i updated the Archlinux and upgraded to new kernel. I am asking if i should update grub because i can't se any initrd.img in /boot folder as i would see it in Ubuntu. In Archlinux i have only these files:

grub  kernel26-fallback.img  kernel26.img  System.map26  vmlinuz26

But in Ubuntu i have:

abi-2.6.32-24-generic         memtest86+.bin
abi-2.6.32-25-generic         System.map-2.6.32-24-generic
abi-2.6.32-26-generic         System.map-2.6.32-25-generic
abi-2.6.32-27-generic         System.map-2.6.32-26-generic
abi-2.6.32-28-generic         System.map-2.6.32-27-generic
abi-2.6.32-29-generic         System.map-2.6.32-28-generic
config-2.6.32-24-generic      System.map-2.6.32-29-generic

grub/                         vmcoreinfo-2.6.32-29-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic  vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-25-generic  vmlinuz-2.6.32-25-generic

initrd.img-2.6.32-29-generic  vmlinuz-2.6.32-29-generic

thx for answers

Re: Dual boot - kernel updating

Arch uses initramfs instead of initrd in its boot process, the initial ramdisk is contained within kernel26.img (and -fallback.img). Read the mkinitcpio wiki page for more info.

Re: Dual boot - kernel updating

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't installing Arch's grub to /dev/[sh]da provide for a faster boot anyway? I always used grub to boot Arch/Mint10/Win7 instead of grub2 because of that.

Re: Dual boot - kernel updating

Thx for answers and tips

@eirik
so, i have to do

mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img -k 2.6.16-ARCH

(of course, desired kernel versin)  than go to Ubuntu and do sudo update-grub or edit grub.cfg manually. Am i right?

@admiralspark
I didn't know that this way is faster. I think i will try it in near future. Thx for the tip.
