I've just installed gnome and compiz, and to start with couldnt switch workspaces at all, even though the workspace switcher applet showed 4 workspaces, clicking on them did nothing. Eventually I discovered that I needed to set the number of desktops in compiz config to 4 (it was set to 1) as well as having the horizontal virtual desktops set to 4.
Now I can switch workspaces using the workspace applet in the panel, but the usual ctrl-alt-left/right shortcut isn't working, and there is no shortcut for workspace switching listed in the keyboard shortcuts preferences.
Do I need to add the shortcut somehow? I thought ctrl-alt-left/right was in gnome by default.

I enable rotate cube and desktop cube and it works for me.

Archer21,
Did you install ccsm? It is part of the wiki article on compiz (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … figuration). When installed, and as suggested by swathe, you can enable rotate cube and desktop cube and then assign a keyboard shortcut if there isn't one already.

Its strange, I had already installed ccsm, I tried switching on both rotate cube and desktop cube, and even though the keyboard shortcut is listed under the settings, it does nothing. I also tried the viewport switcher and that did nothing either. Thanks for the suggestions though!
I just gave up on it and have installed gnome 3 instead (and the workspace switching works now!). Not sure if I should mark this solved or not :S
