Why do some console programs have background color?

I have my Xresources set for transparency in URxvt, and it works perfectly fine. Some programs, however, seem to just have a solid background set by default, like alsamixer:

Is this something I can't change?

Re: Why do some console programs have background color?

Because they are ncurses based and color background is often set do "black" as default. If come across one that lets you change the colors, just set the background to "default" and you'll get your transparency
