I keep getting this message during my boot up:
"No state present for card U0x46d0x8ce"
The boot stops after that message. If I press "Enter" I can login normally. I DO have audio--but that message is kind of annoying every time. Is there a remedy?

You can try to resave your mixer settings. #alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state store

Hmmm: alsactl: command not found
Would my recent install of gnome 3 have anything to do with this??

Try running it as root if you didn't already. Otherwise, I'm not sure about Gnome3.

Yeah, I did run it as root. I believe gnome 3 requires pulseaudio in some way or another, but I have no idea how that would affect my alsa "no state" message during boot.

$ pkgfile alsactl
extra/alsa-utils

I (re)installed alsa-utils, but I'm still getting this error:
bash: alsactl: command not found
Could my PATH be messed up, or...??

What does "which alsactl" show? It should be in /usr/sbin.

"which: no alsactl in (/usr/ucb:/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/opt/webstack/bin:/opt/webstack/sbin)"
[Edit] Found it in /usr/sbin How do I add /usr/sbin to my PATH? (Or is that a bad idea?)
I ran the alsactl command--and that took care of the error message--but I still have to hit "Enter" to get to a login prompt. In other words, my boot messages go by then stop after displaying this one:
Restoring ALSA Levels [Done]
It just lays there until I hit enter. Any idea why it stops there?
