shutdown question

I don't know if this a problem, so I don't know where to look for information about it.

When I shut down my system in Gnome (select System->Shutdown) my system does shut down, but it appears to do so in a way that doesn't look clean (proper).  After I select the shutdown option, X shuts down and a login prompt pops up.  The prompt is all I see for a very brief moment before the actual shut down messages appear and the system finally goes down.

The question I have is, am I suppose to see the login prompt during the shutdown process?  It may be normal, but I feel like I don't have something configured properly.

Re: shutdown question

That is perfectly normal.. There are virtual text consoles (6 of them).. If you start X automatically, i.e., if you boot into GUI automatically, you never get to see these virtual terminals. When you shutdown, the X is killed/closed. That is when you briefly see the virtual terminal.

Re: shutdown question

Yep it does that on mine too, did it (at random times) on Ubuntu as well.

On Arch I see the console for about 3 or 4 seconds before it shuts down, is there any way to make it shut down faster? On Ubuntu as soon as I clicked shut down it would shut down to no power in less than 2 seconds, Arch takes about 10

Re: shutdown question

2 seconds? Really? The fastest I have seen is Puppy Linux which shuts down in 5-6 seconds.. Shutdown in Ubuntu was never that fast for me.. Suspend usually happened in 2 seconds.. Are you sure the Ubuntu shut down? Or did it just suspend?

Re: shutdown question

No 2 seconds for a full shutdown on Ubuntu 10.10. It always did amaze me lol. Just wondered why Arch takes longer when there's much less on the system. Not that shutdown time bothers me at all Arch runs faster and smoother than Ubuntu
