X server can autoconfigure itself pretty well, you may want to try it first.
Read the wiki on how to best configure depending on your video drivers.

"Xorg -configure" can try to automatically configure things and generate a xorg.conf..
But as karol mentioned above, the X server automatically figures out the configuration on the fly, even without an xorg.conf file. So, you should try running X without an xorg.conf file first..
