Right, so I know about ABS but what is I want to compile something that is not there?
I need phctool. The version in AUR is faulty and out of date so I downloaded phctool_0.5.2-2.tar.gz from author's website but what next?
I unpacked it, went inside and tried running makepkg -s
but obviously
==> ERROR: PKGBUILD does not exist.
So should I just proceed as with any other linux, or is there a nicer, cleaner Arch way?

You need to make the PKGBUILD for the application or get help from someone who knows. Try the "AUR requests" section.

If you don't like the ABS way, you can also compile the traditional way:

If you download the out of date PKGBUILD, I'm pretty sure you can just update it yourself and submit it to AUR.
Make it idiot-proof, and someone will breed a better idiot.

Looking that the install.sh script that comes with the package, this should be easy since there is no compiling, just copying.

Sorry, I missed OP's line about the AUR package. Please disregard this post and help yourself to a pancake (with whipped scream!).
