cant seem to get my analog microphone working using alsa

Is it listed in alsamixer? Maybe you just have to increase microphone level there.

in alsamixer, highlight the microphone channel and then press space-bar to enable the mic. Once enabled you should see the word CAPTURE in red under that channel. Then proceed further to set the appropriate level on that channel.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !
