Understandable Installation guide...

It seems I haven't install arch correctly, I've installed arch on my netbook with the "help" of the wiki install guide. I followed the steps but got to the bit where you need to edit the config files before the reboot. I didn't do much editing as the config files don't match the wiki and I didn't understand what bit I should/shouldn't be editing.

I'm assuming one of two things; theres a lot of reading to do, in which case I need pointed to where it is, or you'll tell me arch is not for me as I don't already know what to do with these random files.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Yes, there's some reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide
Those files are anything but 'random' :-) Please tell us which config files don't match the wiki  so we can help.

Where did you get the installer from? http://www.archlinux.org/download/ ? Are you using the 2010.05 version?

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

interesting. it doesn't look like the beginners guide properly shows the recent changes to rc.conf in regards to the  Networking section.
could this be part of the problem?  and are there any other config questions you might have?

You mean https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … NG_Section ?

Specify all interfaces here. Multiple interfaces should be separated with a space as in: (eth0 wlan0)

Edit: I *must* learn to refresh the page before posting ...

@asmo
It seems that the guide shows the files as the are on the install medium you've got. Please tell us what exactly the problems are and we'll try to help.

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

As I recall though, the rc.conf included with the install image is the old one, and get's updated as a pacnew on your first update hmm  so never mind.

MOD_AUTOLOAD is deprecated too. The guide (and the release iso) needs some work. You fix it, Cyrusm and I'll make some coffee ;P

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the quick replies. I was having trouble going through all the config files that you're meant to check before you reboot. I have to admit to ignoring all of them after the first one I looked at (I know you're not meant to but I'm of the opinion I'd do more harm than good) and things seem to have worked, so far. I put MOD_AUTOLOAD in so might take it out.

It was a net install on a samsung N220 netbook. So far wireless isn't working and I need to sort out the function keys for screen brightness etc, but so far its the only distro that I've managed to install without problems. I'm just a little out of my depth, the nearest I've got to a "proper distro" (so to speak) is LMDE. Currently trying to install X.

I found this article useful, along with the ones pointed out above, when I was first installing Arch Linux.

Perhaps at the time - but it is from last year and already our of date. People using install guides from blogs and Youtube need to take into account the rolling release nature of Arch...

The Lifehacker guide mentions the Beginner's Guide and tells readers to familiarize themselves with it:

the Arch Wiki has a great Beginner's Guide (have I mentioned that you should read it?)

so one can hope it will somehow work.

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

Asmo, I have the exact same Netbook and have used Arch on it for over a year now and everything works.

Once you've done your basic setup, check out https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Samsung_N150 as all of the scripts on it concerning function keys work flawlessly on the N220.

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

OK guys it would appear my N220 is immune to Arch as well. I have managed to enable the wireless however it can't see my wireless network. It can see my neighbours networks but not mine. I've had this problem with every single distribution I've tried. These same LiveCD distros can see my network on my other laptop so it isn't my router of the distros.

Why can no distro see my network on the N220? Its @@@@ing annoying!

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

Did you install the netcfg and wireless_tools packages when you installed Arch?  It was on the CD below the base-devel packages.  If you answer yes, we can go from there.

Re: Understandable Installation guide...

Not sure, how I find out the whereis command shows nothing for both.

The wireless is working. I can see my neighbours networks, just not mine which is right next to it. Its the same with every distro on this netbook, apart from windows which works.

EDIT: Both install now. Wireless_tools was installed just install netcfg. (-Qs option, really should read up more)
