I had my printer previously working using CUPS + epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (which is found in the AUR). Recently it started to print full black pages and I've been unable to figure it out. I've reinstalled CUPS and reinstalled the driver from AUR. I've also manually compiled the driver which had the same result. My guess is a CUPS update broke its compatibility with the driver.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
The printer is an Epson Stylus NX420.

Try epson-inkjet-printer-escpr 1.0.4-1 and epson-inkjet-printer-nx420 1.0.0-3
I had inverted colors with hp cups drivers too, only ijs drivers (ghostscript) work for me

Same here.
My Epson Stylus SX420W will only print black pages suddenly. It has been working perfectly before.
The driver mindwar mentioned is actually from the epson-inkjet-printer-sx420 package. I use the same one.

I have the same problem with Epson Stylus TX133... It seems there is a problem with ghostscript https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124366. I tried downgrading but it didn't work for me.

At least as much as I am concerned, the latest update to ghostscript 9.04-5 fixes the problem. Printing is fine again.

I can confirm what Frankston said... Now with the update to ghostscript to 9.05-5 the problem got fixed.
By the way... I have to do:
# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
as stated in Cups Wiki Page
I think the post should be marked as SOLVED
