awesome wm + chromium

Just installed awesome to see what its like. I'm sure I'll learn how to use it properly over the coming weeks.

But my first question is, at the moment to browse the web I open a terminal and then type in chromium. Is this how all you guys do it or is there a way of just opening chromium from the awesome menu (the menu that appears when you click the a)?

I'm opening soft with program called dmenu.

In my rc.lua I have keybinded on Mod+p command:

dmenu_run -i

Try install dmenu, or you can use build-in awesome launcher, I think you can run awesome launcher with Mod+r, but dmenu is so much better... just install it and test it.

You can also try "gmrun", pretty easy.
But I'd stick to "dmenu" it suits tiled environment nicely.

Awesome has a built in run dialog. If I remember correctly, the default keyboard shourtcut is super+r. Adding a shortcut to the menu is quite straightforward. Just add somethin like {"web browser", "chromium"} to the menu section of your rc.lua file.

But I'd really recommend reading the archwiki entry on awesome, as well as that of the awesome wm project itself--especially this. These kinds of fairly basic questions are well covered there. Also, it's generally a good idea to just familiarize yourself with the rc.lua file, mess around with it a bit and learn that way. The default config is fairly well documented, so it's quite easy to figure out how to change stuff even if you don't know any lua.
