This is my first attempt at installing arch. Sorry if this sounds dumb..
I cannot reboot from within Xfce4. I get an error message that says "Not Authorized". My account IS in the "power" group, and once X shuts down, I can reboot with no problem.

Have you read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … ithin_Xfce ?
How exactly are you trying to reboot - from the menu, from the commanline - what command?

Probably from the Xfce widget, he needs to get his consolekit stuff fixed.

Yes, trying to use the widget. I haven't figured out the DM/Consolekit stuff yet. I've been starting Xfce manually everytime so far. If you say that's the source of my problem, I believe you. I'm off to work on that.. thx

Do I HAVE to install a Display Manager? I'm not really interested in a graphical login.

I think it's enough if you start xfce via
exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session
in ~/.xinitrc.

just install consolekit if you don't have it and if you're using startx/.xinitrc you just need to change
exec startxfce4
to
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
You shouldn't need a graphical login for anything...
EDIT: Beaten to it

I've added "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4" to ~/.xinitrc - Made no noticeable difference when I rebooted. Still had to log in and enter "startxfce4" and still got an error when I tried to reboot.
Just entering "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4" at the prompt does start xfce, but I still get the same "Not Authorized" message when I try to reboot.

There is a discussion https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Us … Thestinger and a bug report https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25031 that might be of interest.

Ah HAAA!!! I new it would be something dumb...
I needed to launch Xfce with "startx" instead of startxfce4. Fixed the problem.

Oh yes, startx reads .xinitrc where you got the consolekit stuff you need.
Glad you got it solved, in this case please disregard my previous post :-)

I read the information you pointed me towards, I'm trying hard to learn. Thank you for your time. I will try to limit the silly questions.

Consulting the wiki should help in most cases, but you're free to ask if in doubt or something is not working.
Please remember to mark this thread as solved.
