[SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

First of all, any GTK2 application falls when I start to type something in the input box (gksu, chromium (when typing in address bar), meld, dropbox, elicit, etc.) So I can't use this kind of applications comfortably, and if I really need to use them I put the text to input box by pasting with mouse.

Another class of applications that throws segfaults are applications dealing with graphics and/or fullscreen output. Mplayer, slimlock fall at start, image viewers, such as gqview, galapix, sxiv, falls when I try to switch to the full screen. Also acroread falls after few seconds of showing the splash screen. And opera falls when I load an image inside tab by the direct URL and start moving my mouse on it. I thought it might be related with cairo, because I was using cairo-xcb (i3lock-libcairo requires it). Recently I switched back to stable cairo, but the problem with segfaults stays.

My system seems to be up to date. Here the list of installed packages: http://pastebin.com/jPi99fVN, and packages from AUR: http://pastebin.com/4BYwNYE0. Hoping for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

Could you run one under gdb?

I never used gdb, but I'll try to run it with slimlock first (the most simple application). Already googling for tutorials about gdb. I wish Arch Linux Wiki had one for non-C++-programmers like me.

It's probably because of the libpng/libtiff rebuild. You have to do a full update of your system.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

@filoktetes Do you mean this update http://www.archlinux.org/news/libpnglib … m-testing/? I successfully updated my system with it and didn't get any new bugs (instead of rebuilding cairo-xcb from AUR that I had, I replaced it with vanilla cairo, and all was ok). I've been experiencing aforementioned problem even more earlier, few months ago, actually when I started to study and migrate to Arch, so I can't say, after which package update they appeared.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

After the recent updates (apparently especially after the libpng, etc stuff), I've had quite a few mysterious failures (and the odd segfaults), mainly regarding printing. But I've upgraded everything I should have, and rebuilt as necessary from the AUR. Something(s) making the system more unstable than it was ...? Need to try and pin it down better, of course.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

I debugged opera and gtk2 application with gdb, and exception with stacktrace look similar in both cases: http://pastebin.com/5WMEMrz2, http://pastebin.com/R5tqZa2c.
It somehow related to libxcursor. I already tried to reinstall it, but it didn't help. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

Oh, sorry, wait. I had a directory .icons with simlink named default targeted to /usr/share/icons/Neutral++White/. I removed it, and all works without problems after reboot. I even didn't remember why I placed this simlink, it seems like it was kind of a workaround for some case.

Topic can be marked as solved.

You mark your own threads as solved, rather than the mods doing it, sgtpep.  Just edit the topic and put [Solved] in there.

Re: [SOLVED] A lot of programs fall with Segmentation fault

So, if be specific the problem was due to particular xcursor theme from AUR: xcursor-neutral++-white.
