pacman-key --init gets stuck

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Arch on VirtualBox. The actual installation part went fine. Then I did pacman -Syu, also fine. Then I followed instruction and did

pacman-key --init; pacman-key --populate archlinux

Now it's stuck on "gpg: Generating pacman keychain master key..."

Is there a known fix for this?

wiki is your friend : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … entropy.3F

1) Wait it out
2) Move your mouse or clickety clack your keyboard
3) run updatedb on another virtual terminal

Just to be perfectly clear, there is nothing wrong.  Your system needs to collect enough entropy to create some really good random numbers.  The best lay explanation of entropy is that it is a measure of the disorganization of things.

Re: pacman-key --init gets stuck

I think the issue is it used to give a message about what was happening, something to the effect of "...need more entropy...", but now it doesn't, it just stops at "generating master key" and appears to be doing nothing, and no indication that the user should be doing something.  What happened to the hint message?

A hint message really would be helpful. I kept running it for hours now, and then found out that I should feed it with random data...

When in doubt read the wiki.

Re: pacman-key --init gets stuck

You can file a feature request, if you need a message on the terminal saying "collecting entropy".
Edit:
I have a question, Can't we automate this feature, do we need to undergo these manual steps( not that the current setup is too tough, but sounds primitive ), other distros (Debian, Fedora) don't have to do these steps to have signed packages. By the way having these steps is not KISS, either. newbies might find it bit awkward with this unusual steps.

KISS and newbie-friendly are not the same thing; if newbies struggle with these (simple) basics how will automating them make their experience with more complex issues any more approachable?
