[SOLVED] Crashing to SLiM (xf86-video-intel issue with SNA)

After upgrading the following packages today:

[2012-08-27 20:45] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2012-08-27 20:45] synchronizing package lists
[2012-08-27 20:45] starting full system upgrade
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded hspell (1.1-2 -> 1.2-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded hwids (20120730-1 -> 20120815-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded initscripts (2012.08.2-1 -> 2012.08.3-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded libatasmart (0.18-2 -> 0.19-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded libgssglue (0.3-1 -> 0.4-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded udisks (1.0.4-4 -> 1.0.4-5)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded wireless_tools (29-6 -> 29-7)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.20.4-1 -> 2.20.5-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded xorg-server-common (1.12.3.901-1 -> 1.12.4-1)
[2012-08-27 20:48] upgraded xorg-server (1.12.3.901-1 -> 1.12.4-1)

And then after rebooting and logging in via SLiM I was getting thrown back to the login screen after a few seconds. I eventually discovered it was due to AWN, confirmed by the fact that the problem stopped after I commented out the corresponding line in Openbox's autostart that launches AWN.

Anyone have any idea what the cause of the problem is?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashing to SLiM (xf86-video-intel issue with SNA)

Just realised that I am also unable to shutdown/reboot/logout via oblogout. Don't know if that helps narrow down what's causing the problem?

EDIT: In fact the prob with oblogout only occurs if I'm logged in after having been thrown back to SLiM (due to AWN). If I login normally (i.e. AWN prevented from launching) then oblogout will work as normal.

Re: [SOLVED] Crashing to SLiM (xf86-video-intel issue with SNA)

I had another crash, but this time when simply browsing via Firefox. Spent a bit of time looking through logs but no luck. Then decided to try downgrading packages from the last update (see OP). Tried xorg-server and xorg-server-common first. Resulted in X not starting ("no screen found"), so I upgraded them again. Then downgraded xf86-video-intel which solved everything. Checked the bug reports, and it turns out this is a known issue when running using SNA (which I was):

[url]https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31311?project=1&cat[0]=2&string=xf86-video-intel[/url]

So for now I'm sticking with version 2.20.4-1 until the issue is resolved.
