Need Advice on Installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Arch Guest

I tried this in virtualbox forums, but it's very slow there. Can someone tell me the correct method to install guest additions in a Arch guest?

In the archwiki is instructs you to use pacman -S virtualbox-guest-utils, which according to the guys over at virtualbox forums is the wrong guest additions. Problem is that when I try installing from the virtual environment I get the code:

Unable to unmount the CD/DVD image /usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso from the machine Arch-64 Clone. Would you like to force unmounting of this medium?
Could not unmount the currently mounted media/drive (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

and I'm kind of stuck. I found a few hits in google for these error codes but nothing that has helped me so far.

There have been a few changes to the VirtualBox packages lately. You will also want the virtualbox-guest-modules.

Is that error from pacman? I didn't think the virtualbox-guest-iso was used by an Arch guest system, but maybe it is?

Oh, did you hit the "Install Guest Additions" under the "Devices" menu? If so, get rid of that and make sure it's not mounted under Devices | CD/DVD Devices.

Re: Need Advice on Installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Arch Guest

The error code is from VBox. I followed the arch wiki for installing guest additions and I was told that was incorrect, so your guess is as good as mine. I'll try installing guest-modules and see if that fixes it.

yea, I did try installing via devices menu, that's actually what gave me the error code.

Rule #1: Don't listen to people who know nothing about ArchLinux, listen to the Wiki.

If the guest OS is Arch Linux, is there something unclear about the instructions from here?

Re: Need Advice on Installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Arch Guest

DSpider- those are the instructions I carried out from the very beginning... however I noticed some random behavior and flickering on windows when I dragged them with the mouse. I had noticed problem before in another guest OS and it disappered when I installed guest additions.

If you suggest the arch wiki method of installing guest additions, do you know what else I can check to troubleshoot the window flickering?

Re: Need Advice on Installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Arch Guest

Are you sure that you ran those commands in the guest OS (and not on the host OS) ? After all, they're called guest additions. Because it's easy to misinterpret if both the guest and the host are Arch Linux.

Try adding more video RAM. The default is 12 MB.

If it's GNOME or KDE, you probably need around 128 MB. Try to keep it in multiples of two (64, 128, 256, etc).

I definitely installed on the guest OS. The DE is e17 and I upped the video ram to 24 but still doing it. I'll try 64 to see if that helps.

E17 has all kinds of "pretty" effects. Even running directly on my system (ATI X1400, 128 MB) the effects aren't always smooth.

Re: Need Advice on Installing Virtualbox Guest Additions in Arch Guest

hmmm, then maybe it's e17 beucase I don't have that problem on other guest OS. I noticed 2D video acceleration is unchecked so I'm going to fool around with that and some other settings to see if I can't solve this...at least now I know not to go to virtualbox forums to get help ; )

*edit* even bumping up the video ram to 128 which is the max didn't help.
