ATI again...

I have laptop with an ATI mobility 7500. I've tried installing the ati-drivers from community (I rebuild them against the stock kernel using abs, but I get the sameissue with archck) and whenever I try and load the fglrx module I get:

FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.13-ARCH/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): No such device

I've tried playing with my xorg.conf to see if I can get it working, but no joy...

Can anyone help me figure out how to get 3D working on my laptop?

The relevant portion of my xorg.conf is

Section "Device"
    Option     "Accel"
    Option    "AGPMode"    "4"
    Option    "AGPFastWrite"    "yes"
    Option    "EnablePageFlip" "yes"
    Option    "DDCMode"    "yes"
    Identifier  "ati_7500"
    Driver      "radeon"
    VendorName    "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName    "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
    #VideoRam    65536
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

This was taken from an example on linux-laptops.net

Re: ATI again...

Are you sure the fglrx-drivers support Mobility 7500? I don't use ATI myself, but I know there's something fishy about them and their support, and I have vague memories reading that the Mobility 7500 is not supported by those drivers. Not sure though.

Re: ATI again...

It's possible they don't support them.  If that's the case then aren't there some open source drivers that might help me get some sort of 3D acceleration?

Re: ATI again...

I think there's some recent attempt write open source drivers. I've come across more or less successful reports, if I remember correctly. Google is your friend?

Re: ATI again...

check this out

EDIT: Skip the gentoo-specific bits, of course smile
EDIT2: Actually, come to think of it, all you probably need to do is to add

driver "ati"

to xorg.conf.

Re: ATI again...

OK - I have made the driver "ati" and I have the following modules loading when X starts:

radeon, intel_agp, agpgart and drm

But I still have no direct rendering...

What am I missing here?

In case it provides any clues - here is my complete xorg.conf:

# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.

# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:

Re: ATI again...

OK, I think I got it. Change driver "ati" to driver "radeon". Sorry for the misinformation earlier. Also try man radeon.

Re: ATI again...

Didn't make any difference  sad

From what I've found via google it seems that it certainly should work and that the radeon driver does support my card - but I'm having no luck...

And I'm out of ideas...

If you have installed fglrx previously, try uninstalling it. It probably messes with your libgl... otherwise, I've no clue..

Re: ATI again...

removed ati-drivers and rebooted.  Still nothing.  Having looked at so many "how tos" I've done everything I should have done.  I've got the right modules in my kernel, I've got the right options in my xorg.conf, but I still get no direct rendering.

The kernel is the stock kernel, but as far as I can make out, it contains all it needs to...

This must be possible as others have done it - but  I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5100 in case anyone has something similar...

Re: ATI again...

Considering that everything is open source and you don't need to meddle with ATi themselves, and that most people are not having problems getting DRI to work, it's probably something really obvious that you've missed. One of those shit-how-could-I-miss-that kinda thing smile

Poke around some more on your own system rather than google, see if you can find something. You could also try the latest Knoppix to see if you get DRI there. If you do, you're at least one step closer...

Re: ATI again...

From the Official ATI Linux x86 Drivers FAQ:

Q2: Which ATI graphics cards can use this driver?

A2: The ATI Proprietary Linux driver currently supports Radeon 8500 and later AGP or PCI Express graphics products, as well as FireGL 8700 and later products. We do not currently plan to include support for any products earlier than this. Drivers for earlier products should already be available from the DRI Project or Utah-GLX project.

So it would seem that the ati-drivers package (which is the official ATI Linux x86 Drivers put into a handy Arch package, much thanks for that!) does not support your card. As such, you should be running "radeon" as your display driver. Taking a look at the X.Org Documentation on the 'radeon' driver (HERE) shows that it should support your card... and with 3D rendering, in fact.

What I'd do is try replacing the driver with 'radeon' again being sure to replace the driver in the section for the device the X Server is actually using (from your xorg.conf, it looks like that's the "ati_7500" device). Test if you have Direct Rendering (3D) enabled with the command

glxinfo | grep direct

in a console. If it says "direct rendering: No" and then some other stuff, post here the output of 'glxinfo' with no grep. Also, post your entire Xorg.log.0 file so we can check everything it says. Hopefully we'll get this working. :-)

Re: ATI again...

Try to reinstall the kernel or even better compile it by yourself.

When you compile the kernel by yourself compile followingg as modules:
Device Drivers --> Character Devices -->
1.  /dev/agpgart <M> -> the appropriate agp driver for your chipset <M>
2. Direct Rendering Manager <M> -->  ATI Radeon <M>

Load "radeon" through your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

When this doesn't help try to replace your xorg.conf by the xorg.conf generated with xorgconfig.

Hope this will help you.

I've got no problem with recompiling my own kernel, although I'm pretty happy that everything I need for this is in the stock one...

Re: ATI again...

precisely as you say; you shouldn't need to recompile your kernel. The relevant modules are there and as long as you don't get strange messages about them not being able to load, then you're set on the kernel part of things.

Re: ATI again...

I noticed the following in the log:

(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module
is loaded before the radeon kernel module.

and

(II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled
(==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled
(==) RADEON(0): Silken mouse enabled
(II) RADEON(0): Using hardware cursor (scanline 1026)
(II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 1280 x 7161
(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

So I added agpgart and intel-agpgart to rc.conf before radeon in the module list.

I now get:

(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering enabled

But I still don't have direct rendering...

Re: ATI again...

Try posting your entire log again... the Radeon driver may have initialized DRI, but that doesn't mean that DRI's actually working. I had a problem kinda like this when I was trying to get 3D accel working with my Radeon 9600 on my laptop. :-)

Also, try this this command:

export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose

and post the output of 'glxinfo' again.

Re: ATI again...

I've upgraded xorg and glxinfo now contains two new lines which are very interesting:

libGL error: open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)

The complete output of glxinfo with verbose debugging is:

It looks like this could simply be a permissions thing...

Re: ATI again...

This has got to be a permissions thing - if I start X as root I have direct rendering... and over 1100 FPS (I know that's not awe inspiring but it'll do!)

Indeed. Why not try to run X as root and see if it works...

I thought it would something like this before, but I noted that your dri section had the correct permissions...

What about /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL*

Here's mine for a reference:

[root@nightfrost ~]# ll /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL*

Re: ATI again...
