[solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

Here's GTK3 app and GTK2 app side by side:

xLYDszo.png

Fonts are not rendering correctly on any GTK3 app. I use Ubuntu's patched versions of freetype2, fontconfig and cairo from AUR:

freetype2-ubuntu fontconfig-ubuntu cairo-ubuntu

How can I get GTK3 apps to render fonts correctly? I don't use any DE, just dwm as window manager.

I don't see any gtk3 app on this image.

Ah, you are right. Thunar still uses GTK2 and Firefox isn't really a native GTK application. Anyway fonts look good in Firefox and Qt applications but suck on GTK applications.

Any solutions?

Re: [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

Some info about uour font settings would be helpful.
Which font are you using, size, etc.

The font in Thunar looks exactly like this one, don't see any problem there. Perhaps you have a different font set for QT? Look at the settings in 'qtconfig' tool.

No, the font does not look right in my thunar (left). I have another Arch Linux + dwm setup, where it looks right (right):

Re: [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

What are your antialiasing, hinting and subpixel rendering settings? Look in '~/.config/fontconfig/' or '~/.fonts.conf'.

Re: [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

I don't have any. I have set fonts with lxappearance in both my systems.

Ubuntu Condensed 11

Antialiasing
[x] Enable antialiasing

Hinting
[x] Enable hinting
Hinting style: Full

Sub-pixel geometry
Sub-pixel geometry: RGB

I don't think this have anything to do with my files under ~/

Re: [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

Does it look better if you just use the default /non-patched freetype2, fontconfig, and cairo packages?

Re: [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

Stupid me!

The cairo-ubuntu from AUR had failed to build. Followed Ichigo-Roku's tip in comments and now everything works.

In the PKGBUILD you have to replace "autoreconf" by "autoreconf -fi".

Anyway, thanks for your help and sorry for taking your time. smile
